A Taste of Texas w/ Julie Jarnagin

I am
so excited today to have my good friend Julie Jarnagin here. Julie is one of my
favorite authors too! And today she’s talking about her novella. Take it away,
Julie!
Hi,
everyone. Julie Jarnagin here. I’m so excited to be on Jessica’s blog today.
Jessica is one of those friends who can always make me smile even when I’m
having a bad day!
Do
y’all love comfort food as much as I do? When I think of comfort food, the first
thing I think about is the potlucks we used to have in the basement of my small
hometown church. The entire table would be covered in fried chicken, ham,
broccoli and cheese casserole, deviled eggs (someone always brought deviled
eggs), and more delicious dishes than I can list. And then there was the
dessert table! Coconut cream pie, Texas sheet cake, banana pudding…yum!
My
goal in writing my latest series, Taste of Texas, was to give you that same
feeling that I got at those potlucks full of great food and warm people. And
I’m having a blast writing them. These books are all set in central Texas and
have plenty of good food and cute cowboys. What could be better? 🙂
I
recently released the first book in the series, a novella titled The Art of Falling where you’ll meet
Heather, a cautious art museum fundraiser, and Wyatt, a bull rider with a big
heart. I actually wrote my upcoming novel Kiss the Cowboy first, but as I was
working on it, I realized that two of the secondary characters, Heather and Wyatt,
had their own story to tell. That’s where the idea for The Art of Falling was born.
What are some
of your favorite kinds of comfort food?
Below
is my mother-in-law’s famous chocolate sheet cake recipe.
Pat’s
Chocolate Sheet Cake
2
cups sugar
2 cups
flour
1
stick oleo
1/2
cup shortening
1
tsp salt
1
tsp vanilla
4
Tbsp cocoa
1
cup water
2
eggs
1tsp
soda
1/2
cup buttermilk
Mix
flour and sugar in a bowl. Bring oleo, shortening, cocoa and water to a boil.
Add hot mixture to sugar and four, mix well. Add remaining ingredients and mix
well. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes in an 18x12x1 inch pan.
Icing:
1
stick oleo
6
Tbsp milk
1
Tbsp cocoa
1
box powdered sugar
1
tsp vanilla
Bring
oleo, milk and cocoa to a boil. Then add powdered sugar and vanilla. Frost cake
while still hot.
Here’s a peek at The Art of Falling
Heather Tornsten needs a man…a celebrity,
more specifically, for a fundraising gala for the Dallas art museum, where she
works. And what better headliner than bull rider Wyatt Lawrence? Although why
people idolize grown men who make their living falling off animals, she’ll
never understand.
When his mom was diagnosed with cancer,
Wyatt determined to focus on doing what she wants—like visiting some art
museum. But when his mom teams up with Heather Tornsten to get him involved in
a fundraiser, he knows he’s been set up. The more involved he gets with the
pretty events coordinator, the more he realizes falling off a bull is far
safer. Because falling for Heather–who has made it clear that she won’t risk her
heart on any man who courts danger–might break a whole lot more than his bones.

Why We Left Our Church: The Simple Truth

When you leave a church sometimes the following questions are asked and statements are made: “They must be mad or holding a grudge.”
“Who do you think offended them?”
“I bet they didn’t get their way on something and called it quits.”
“I guess they weren’t happy so…”
“Well, something must have happened and ticked them off or they wouldn’t have left.”

Something did happen. It had nothing to do with a feeling. It had to do with a holy stirring.

In Mary Poppins, Burt is playing along in his one man band, entertaining the crowd. Happy. Routine. And something breaks his “day as usual.”

The winds changed.
The atmosphere around him stirred.
He pressed pause, and looked UP.

In wonder, anticipation, and maybe even a bit of confusion, he slowly sings, “”Somethin’s ’bout to begin. Can’t put my finger on what lies in store…” Then he goes back to singing, “Step in time…step in time…”

That’s what happened to us. Something in our spiritual atmosphere stirred and we knew something was about to begin, though we couldn’t quite put our finger on it. So we went back to stepping in time, all the while, waiting…watching…praying for clarity and direction. We looked UP–to Jesus. We did this for over a year.

“To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven…” Ecclesiastes 3:1 NKJV

Some seasons are relatively short. And some…some are long. We spent fifteen years in the church we left. I grew up spiritually there, we dedicated our children, watched them get saved and baptized there. I stepped into all kinds of ministry and stretched…grew. We poured our hearts, our service, our time into the people of this church. We don’t regret a minute of ministry. We cherish those memories. Every. Single. One.

But God began to place the direct community we do life in on our hearts. He strategically placed us in areas of the west end of the county where we have unique opportunities and great relationships. He opened our eyes to see things here we haven’t seen before.

We knew where God was calling us to focus ourselves. Here. Living #thewestlife (as I like to call it).

God’s timing has fallen perfectly into place. One small step at a time. From an established church accepting God’s call to Go West with a 3rd campus to my book contract coming exactly when it did, to snow days that moved dates around to help me finish out my committment to people and God, with grace in a class I love to teach. I could go on and on about things that were divinely set up, but it wouldn’t be a blog. It’d be a book.

My son, front and center, about to be baptized! Good times.

Not only God’s timing, but His fingerprints, blessings, confirmations constantly reminded us that we were in the center of His will. And that’s a peaceful, joyful, wonderful place to be. If we were leaving over hurts, disappointments, anger, bitterness, offense, name the poison, God wouldn’t be showering blessings. He’d be laying on conviction for us to repent. To say we’ve never been angry or upset, disappointed, let down, or frustrated would be a lie. In fifteen years that’s to be expected. For anyone. I mean, good grief I get irritated with the people who came from my body. You think I’d never get miffed at someone who didn’t?

But it’s not a reason to leave a church. If you’ve been in my F.O.R.W.A.R.D. class, you’ve heard me say that. If you know Tim and I well, then you know the kind of people we are, and our hearts, and it wouldn’t cross your mind that we might leave because we’re bitter or angry.  We’re not quitters. So right here, right now, if you’re reading this and your feelings have been hurt and you’re considering leaving your church over it, DON’T. Go to that person. In love. Talk about it. Forgive. Always forgive. Make things right. You’re a family. Family should love each other. The Bible says, “They  (the world) will know us (the church) by our love for one another.”

On a Missions trip in Thailand. We had lunch at the governor’s home
in Chaing Rai, but here we are at her office. Good times.

A few questions that might need answered:
Does that mean we don’t love the people in the church we left? No. Does it mean we love the people in our new church more? No. Because guess what? At the end of the day, we’re all ONE BODY. Church #1 isn’t a body. Church #2 isn’t a body. Church #3, 4, 5, and 6, aren’t a body. They are all PARTS of ONE body and Christ is the head. In fact, gospel preaching churches ought to be working together not competing for who can have the coolest programs, biggest attendance, and more photos on Instagram to brand them, but that’s another post for another day. And thank you so much for those of you who wrapped your arms around me at book club and last night after F.O.R.W.A.R.D. who have cheered us on and are excited for us. It. Meant. Everything!!

Does this mean when we champion our new church and post updates on how amazing the preaching is, the worship is, the events/LifeGROUPS, Youth is that we’re slighting the church we left or other churches in general? NO. If you personally take it that way, then you need to personally deal with it. Sheesh, my most favorite female voice on the planet is still singing on stage at church #1. Waves to my BFF Heather Williams! Will she take offense if I post how beautiful another woman’s voice is that sings on Sunday? No. Because she’s secure enough and knows me well enough to know I’m not slapping her in a passive aggressive way by saying something nice about someone else or the fact that I can be moved by someone else’s voice and anointing. I doubt Beth Moore gets upset when folks talk about how great Priscilla Shirer is. She’s probably overjoyed because that means a woman is getting the Word into her soul. And really…isn’t that what we should be doing as well? Being excited about people growing and maturing in Christ wherever God chooses and by whomever God uses. As I’ve matured in Christ, I’ve come to realize this more and more.

Does this mean we have to stop doing life with the people in Church #1 because we’re not sitting in a Sunday service with them? NO. Faith Readers book club isn’t a leisure group under church #1 anymore, but it is a community Christian women’s book club that meets at the Southaven library. Love you, ladies, and appreciate your amazing outpouring of love and support! Anyone can come and I hope they do! From churches all over the county. We’re all sisters in Christ. Aren’t we? It means I still go to movies and dinner with couples from church #1. It means I still ask them to pray for me. We still go to lunch, shopping, and the zoo. We text and talk over the phone. It means you don’t have to dodge me, hide from me behind Walmart or Target end caps, or pretend you don’t see me in the grocery store (not that you would but just in case). It means you can still send me that invite to lunch you promised and text to check in on me. It means you can still love me.  You don’t have to feel awkward around me. I’m still me. I still love the same Jesus. I still care about you.  Because we’ve established a friendship over faith, not over a building we attend two or three times a week. And this goes for anyone leaving a church or for those who haven’t left. Love each other. Don’t let awkwardness or “territorialness” (is that a word?) keep you from continuing to be friends. Love. Love. Love one another. Even if someone DOES leave over anger or bitterness…those who stay behind, LOVE them, text them and tell them that but mean it. Those who left under those circumstances, pray about that heart condition. Those who stay behind, give a call or text those who have left due to God’s leading and say, “Hey, we love you no matter what and we’re glad about what God is doing in your life. Can’t wait to see how He uses you to reach others. We’re proud of you. We appreciate all you’ve done in this season with us and if you ever need anything…we’re here. With open arms. Always. (cue Journey). And if you can’t say those things, if you don’t feel those things…you should pray about that heart condition.

Okay so I might look angry here, but I’m not! I’m flipping cold! This is the BBQ team serving at Springfest. Good times.

Does it mean that we’re going to secretly try and get members from Church #1 to come to our new church? NO. Sadly, that happens all too often in churches and it shouldn’t. But not with us. This isn’t about trying to take our friends where we’re going. It’s about reaching out to the West end of the county and seeing lives changed for Christ. Seeing broken hearts mended, wounds healed, marriages restored, crime rate dropped because people are coming to know Jesus! It’s not about manipulating already-Christ-followers into coming to a different church. That’s shallow and ridiculous and if you know Tim and I we are not shallow. Sometimes we’re ridiculous–in a good way, though! 🙂

Does it mean we are over-the-moon excited to be where we are and making new friendships, ministering with new people and sitting under new leadership? YES!!! We are thrilled to be a part of Life Fellowship WEST (I only mention the name because many of you either already know or are going to ask anyway, and we’re proud to be there). We are committed and on board with their vision! We have no clue where God will place us as far as ministry. We didn’t walk into the church saying, “Well, we are gifted in XXX areas so we need to do XXX and XXX.” No. I may never teach another F.O.R.W.A.R.D. class again (until it’s published and I have to have DVDs recorded, gulp!) But maybe I will. Or  maybe I’ll work the cafe and put a little cup of chocolaty goodness into the hands of an eager child who needs to hear and know that Jesus loves him/her. That’s the thing about God’s plan. You don’t have every detail when you want it. You have to take steps of faith.  Will I miss ministering with those of you who I’ve been in the trenches with? YES! Am I anticipating getting in the trenches with new friends? YES!

This is the first Trunk or Treat event we ever did. I had a blast working
with my BFF Melanie to organize one of the largest outreaches we’ve ever done! Good times.

This is a good thing for our family. Part of God’s purpose and plan. So we celebrate it. We love you, Church #1 and hope you’ll celebrate it with us as many already have.

It’s time for us to move forward. And this is the next step.

We’re excited about a new START at a  new place. God is doing a new thing Waves at Amanda as I see you, girl!

“My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.” 1 Cor. 16:24 NKJV

When Reed Hamilton arrives in Lake Endwell for a family wedding, he expects to do his part as best man then head back to the big city. But when a a tornado postpones the wedding, the town is in shambles and Reed is injured. Thankfully maid of honor Claire Sheffield offers him one of her cottages to recuperate in. Dedicated to her family and her dream job at the zoo, Claire is all about roots. She’s this city slicker’s opposite, yet as they help the town rebuild, Reed is captivated by her stunning looks and caring ways. He can’t ask Claire to leave the life she loves for him, but he also can’t imagine ever leaving her behind…

Ah! Doesn’t that sound great? Okay, let the games begin!

Would You
Rather…
…be stuck alone in a tornado or with someone you love in a hurricane?
Jill: With someone I love in a hurricane! I’m a big
baby. I don’t want to be in a disaster all by myself!
Reed: Alone. In both.
Claire: I would want to be with all of my loved ones
in the hurricane, and I’d take my baby otters with me.
…work really hard at an interesting job or slack off at a boring job?
Jill: I have the most interesting job, and it’s a
pleasure to work hard at it. A boring job is NOT for me!
Reed: Slacking off isn’t in my vocabulary.
Claire: I worked one summer at my dad’s car
dealership. Talk about boring! Never again. I don’t mind hard work when it’s
interesting.
…be in constant pain or have a constant itch?
Jill: What kind of question is this, Jessica?? I don’t
like pain, and I don’t like itching. I’m adding a third. A constant massage. J
Reed: My recent experience with a broken leg left me
with both. I’d rather be in pain.
Claire: Neither? I guess the itch. But that’s like
asking if I want to eat moldy cheese or a rancid meatball. Both are pretty bad!
…go through life unable to ask any questions or unable to answer any
questions?
Jill: I have a big mouth. I like to answer questions.
But I ask a lot of questions too… Let’s go with being unable to answer
questions. I’m a mom. Asking questions is what I do.
Reed: As a project manager for a construction company,
I have to be able to ask questions. The answers show up in the end result.
Claire: Oh, this is hard! If I had to choose one, I’d
say I’d rather be unable to ask questions. I love being a sounding board for my
friends and family.
Love these answers! It was a good question! Ha! Jill,
tell us what you’re working on next?
Jill: My second book, Unexpected Family, will
be in stores in September, so I’ve been preparing for that! Unexpected
Family
is also set in Lake Endwell and features Claire’s oldest brother
Tom, who gets a life-altering surprise. I’m also polishing my third Lake
Endwell book, which is about Claire’s brother Bryan and his outdoor adventures
with the new girl in town. Thank you so much for having me today, Jessica!
I’m stoked to have you here. So proud of you, Jill!

she’s about to lose her job and her apartment. But working closely with Gabe

she has the past to prove it.

Gabriel Brookson wants out
of Audrey’s friend-zone, but when he pursues her romantically, he ruffles more
than a few feathers in his congregation. How much is he willing to give up for
this wonderful, quirky woman, and will Audrey accept him if he risks it all?

DEAR SPY:

Everyone today’s post is hilarious! They
say first impressions are everything and our lovely Nichole Parks shares hers
today and I laughed so hard, I nearly cried.
We’re talking all things spies, which as a suspense writer, I happen to
love! Take it away, Nichole.

The time
I accused my brother’s new girlfriend of being a spy was risky. I can see that
now. Back then I only knew two things about Adrian.

She was “nice
and sweet.” Which didn’t comfort me any. Supposedly, KP’s starter girlfriend had been nice and sweet,
and I’d hit her car. Lucky for me, the only thing bent out
of shape was my parents. They decided I bumped What’s-Her-Face’s car on
purpose.
And maybe
I would have if I had thought of it.
If Adrian
was nice and sweet, she could save it for the rest of the family. I needed to get
to know her beyond two adjectives neighbors use to describe serial killers. This
is my brother’s heart we’re talking about.
After a
stilted Skype introduction thanks to my paranoid bro, I knew I’d have to take
matters into my own hands. I needed something KP couldn’t filter. But what? The
lovebirds study in Missouri and I’m nine hours north in Indiana.
Making
good use of my online stalking skills, I pulled the university’s address. Snail
mail could sneak by KP’s defenses undetected.
The thing was: I didn’t want to scare her off. Not really.
One honest conversation. That’s all I asked. So, ahem, I penned this letter.
Dear
Adrian (if that is your real name),
KP
tells me you are “nice” and “sweet.” But I know your secret.
You’re
a spy. A spy on a mission to… Well, I haven’t quite figured out what your
mission at Name of University is—yet.
Regardless, I’ve read too many romantic suspense novels to mistake “nice” and
“sweet” for mere adjectives. You’re on a covert op, yes? Flying under the
radar? Eh? Eh?

You
can tell me. Or don’t. A good spy never reveals her secrets.

I
would also like to thank you. Thank you for using my brother as part of your
cover. You’re a smart girl, knowing a couple is less likely to be noticed than
a single blonde. While most sisters would worry about their brother’s safety
under such dangerous circumstances, I trust he’s in good hands. You are after
all a spy and probably following in the steps of Cody Banks.

Before
I leave you to your “studies” or whatever stakeout you need to be staking-out,
you should know I too have secrets. Since I know yours, it’s only fair you know
mine:

I
have a taser. And a spikey flashlight. Please don’t take this as a threat. I
simply want to offer my weapons should they be of any assistance to you during
the stint of your mission.
Warm
regards,
Nichole
Parks

To you, dear person reading, this letter
may seem drastic, even demented—especially for a first impression… And, yeah,
you have a point, but this is girlfriend #3. Seeing as how I fender bendered What’s-Her-Face’s
car, it’s basically go big or go home at this point.

Less than
a week later, Secret Agent Adrian wrote back. Confident she could trust me to
keep her information classified, she disclosed minor details regarding her
cover, assured me KP’s safety was top priority, and inquired about borrowing a
weapon or two.

Something
tells me this one’s a keeper.

What’s
the craziest first impression you’ve made/experienced?

3 Things Prayer Can Do For You

One of my favorite Old Testament books is Nehemiah. This book has so much to glean, from rebuilding your life, your faith, your church, your community, your leadership skills…the list goes on and on.

Today, let’s talk about prayer. Prayer is essential in your daily life. Key word: Daily. Prayer can do many things. When I pray it builds my faith and dependence on God. It feels good to dump all the things I’m concerned about on Someone who can actually fix me…and the issues. I don’t always see immediate results to my prayers. I don’t always get the answers I want. But God is listening and answering. His way. His time. And if I sit still long enough, I’ll hear Him talk back. Through Scripture. Through ideas that come to mind. Many different ways.

Nehemiah was the king’s cupbearer. He was a trusted servant to the king. And at this time, many were going back to Jerusalem to rebuild what had been torn and burned when God’s people went into captivity.

Chapter 1 is a prayer over the situation. Nehemiah confesses his sin, the sin of his people, and humbly submits his requests to God. Here’s just a portion:

“O Lord, I pray, please let Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant, and to the prayer of Your servants who desire to fear Your name; and let Your servant prosper this day, I pray, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.”” Nehemiah 1:11

Nehemiah needs success. He’s about to speak to the king and ask to go back to Jerusalem to help rebuild.

Because of prayer three things happened for Nehemiah:

1. Permission: Nehemiah was granted access, permission to accomplish God’s will and to be used by God.

Then the king said to me, “What do you request?”
“So I prayed to the God of heaven. And I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, I ask that you send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ tombs, that I may rebuild it.”
Then the king said to me (the queen also sitting beside him), “How long will your journey be? And when will you return?” So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.” Nehemiah 2:4-6 NKJV
When we come humbly before God with His glory and purposes in mind, we’ll find permission from Him and He will grant us access. But it doesn’t stop there!
2. Provision: God didn’t just give Nehemiah favor with the king to grant him earthly permission, but He saw to it that Nehemiah had all the provision he needed to set out and accomplish the God-glorifying task at hand.
“Furthermore I said to the king, “If it pleases the king, let letters be given to me for the governors of the region beyond the River,[a] that they must permit me to pass through till I come to Judah, and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he must give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel which pertains to the temple,[b] for the city wall, and for the house that I will occupy.” And the king granted them to me according to the good hand of my God upon me.” Nehemiah 2:7-8 NKJV
You never need to doubt provision and resources when God gives you permission to move forward. Whether it’s a new job, ministry, move…if God allows it, He won’t set you up to fail but always to succeed! Also a side note: remember to ask for anything! “You have not because you ask not” (James) Who knows what God will grant you, but you can be sure you’ll never receive it if you don’t at least ask!
And the 3rd thing we see is…
3. Protection: God made sure to protect Nehemiah on his journey. Now let me make a note to state this, I am not saying that if God calls you to something that you won’t ever get sick, or struggle, or your car break down. Sometimes that’s part of the faith-journey–trusting God through it all. Even Nehemiah faced serious adversity and opposition, to the point they were building with one hand and holding swords with the other. But there is a measure of supernatural protection. Those men never killed them or defeated God’s purposes, even when they threatened it.
“Then I went to the governors in the region beyond the River, and gave them the king’s letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.” Nehemiah 2:9
Whatever God is asking you to do, know that if He’s calling you to it, He’ll see you through it.
“… The effective, fervent prayerof a righteous man avails much.” James 5:16 NKJV

“I know that You can do anything and no plan of Yours can be thwarted.” Job 42:2 HCSB

“Behold, I make a covenant. Before all your people I will do marvels such as have notbeen done in all the earth, nor in any nation; and all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the Lord. For it is an awesome thing that I will do with you.” Exodus 34:10 NKJV

When Pastor Gabe asks
Audrey Gilbraith to use her mad florist skills to help him design a prayer
garden, she’s all in, especially since it helps take her mind off the fact
she’s about to lose her job and her apartment. But working closely with Gabe
and not falling for him is complicated. She’s not pastor’s wife material, and
she has the past to prove it.

Gabriel Brookson wants out
of Audrey’s friend-zone, but when he pursues her romantically, he ruffles more
than a few feathers in his congregation. How much is he willing to give up for
this wonderful, quirky woman, and will Audrey accept him if he risks it all?

Are You Ready to EMERGE?

@HeatherSunseri

If you’ve known me two seconds, you know that I love Heather Sunseri’s books. Her debut Mindspeak series was off the charts amazing and her newest book EMERGE in a brand new series proves to be just as amazing.

In her true to “science goes sideways” form, she presents the coolest setting, fantastic quirky cast and a story that will rivet her readers. You should be one of her readers. Just sayin.
