Us chillin at the fair. I’m sittin on my butt. What? It was cold! |
Monday, I talked about BBQing at the Springfest and how we rode rides, well my kids did–I tried not to throw up.
I loved watching my 7 year old experience it. The food, music, atmosphere, rides, games. All of it.
He’s read books about fairs. I have too. In fact, I love experiencing new things through stories, but some things like events and places need to be a hands-on experience.
Like the fair.
For example, I enjoyed a book about women who wore corsets and got ready for their debut, but I do NOT want to experience a corset hands-on. My uterus’ll fall out. It will! Just read about them! I also loved reading about a guy who sky-dived, but I don’t think I need the hands-on experience, but you may say differently, so…
Tell me something you think must be experienced hands-on vs. learning or reading about the experience.
Have a great weekend!
One word: parenting.
I thought I knew exactly how to go about raising a model child–until I became a mother. I ate so many words when we were raising our daughter that it's a miracle I'm not as big as a barn. 🙂
Oooh! I've eaten a lot of words too. This made me giggle!
Oh, yeah, Keli. I'm with you on this one!
I wrote an entire book centered around a sky-diving course. I've never been. Needless to say that is one book I do believe will never be published. What was I thinking?
Hmmm…hands on? I'll go with being a Cirque de Soleil performer. And I have no idea if I spelled that correctly. Spelling. There's another hands on. Happy Friday!
~ Wendy
I'm too afraid of falling, but man did you see Pink's performance a couple years ago on the Grammy's! A-mazing!
I had no idea what someome grieving a parent (or someone else very close) was going through until I experienced it myself. I can remember not knowing how to comfort a friend. Not knowing the right words. And I had no idea what it would feel like to have to push on through life with an unbelievable heartache.
Sorry for the depressing answer. You asked. 😉
Don't be sorry, my friend and you're right. I did ask. I agree, it's hard to comfort someone with the right words when you've never experienced that for yourself, but I've found sometimes you don't need profound words or advice. A simple I love you, I'm thinking of you, and a hug does wonders…or at least helps.
Love you! 🙂
Absolutely! Love you right back!
It is amazing how God uses our tragedies to eventually bring us emphathy for others. This heartache isn't for naught. Even though it hurts right now (and always will, though it may dull), God will use it, Heather. He is faithful to give us the strength we need. One step at a time. Hugs to you.
I'm going to go with the ultimate hands on experience – parenting.
And I've left an award for you on my blog. Please stop by when you have a chance.
I agree! We had a family member give us all sorts of advice on how we were doing things wrong. Then when they had a kid, we laughed because ours is 5 billion times more well-behaved! LOL Pay backs!
Thanks for the award, I'll be popping over shortly! 🙂
Writing. You can read a lot of who-to writing books but you really have to jump in an experience it to get what they're saying.
And…making petits fours. LOL
I read tons fo cook books, thought I had it, but until I went to make them…I had no idea what a pain they were. 🙂
Woo! You ain't just whistlin Dixie there! So true. Petits fours, I've never made. You don't put tofu in them do you? 😉
Your uterus will fall out? You crack me up! I could have read my whole life about Israel, but actually going and walking where Jesus walked changed everything.
LOL! It could! Oooh, going to Israel! Perfect!
Marriage!! You can read all about it, but until you experience it…
Also, being in the military (for me, as a Marine wife) because my husband read all the books, but until he was knee deep in the USMC, he had no clue what it was truly like. Rude awakening there!
Great post! Have a wonderful weekend! 🙂
That is so true! I bet the military is an eye opener! You have a great weekend too!
So many things come to mind! Making your own bread, washing clothes on a washboard, churning butter, milking a cow. Those things are HARD work!
I get all whiny if I have to make two trips to the grocery store in the same week. Imagine having to shop for six months' worth of supplies at a time?
I gotta say, making my own breads sounds great, the rest…um…God knew what He was He was doing putting me in this day and age!
Anything physical. There's nothing like experiening your body doing something new–like dancing, running, handstands, even tossing a baseball. They have to be experienced!
I never could do a handstand, but I've tried! LOL
I was just talking with a mentor about this type of thing this morning…
For me, it's having kids. I want kids, but I keep worrying about how having them will mess with my dream of writing. My husband worries about what it will mean financially, or how we'll have to sacrifice.
My mentor said that we're completely missing the piece that can't really be felt until we actually HAVE the kids…like the idea that I might rather spend time with my kids than writing, or how it's about relationship, and because you love your children, you WANT to sacrifice for them…or at least, you're willing to.
I'm praying that God will give me a better mindsight and calm my fears about it all. I know in my heart that children are a blessing, but right now, without holding my actual kids in my arms, I have no concept of how I could actually be willing to sacrifice my dream for their well-being.
And now I just sound like a completely selfish person. But you asked, and I'm honest.
Happy Friday, friend!
I texted you, but I didn't want you to feel left out of the comments! LOL Hugs!
Hey there Lindsay, I remember when we first got married and went on a schooner cruise (more like work than cruising!). I remember wondering aloud about having kids, and one of the wise women there said, "If you wait till you can afford kids, you'll never have them." It's so true. I'm so glad I had all three of mine before I turned 30…though it was INSANE when they were all little, NOW they're more independent and I can focus more on writing (and I'm still young-ish! grin). However, there were years when writing was just impossible (when all 3 were under 3 and in diapers! AGH). I'd say to pray about it and be ready for what God tells you. He always knows best!
Thanks, Heather. Yep, definitely a lot of praying going on over here. 🙂 Thanks for your words of wisdom and encouragement!
I'm going to be un-original and say marriage, too! No matter how someone tries to prepare you, it isn't the same as living it day in and day out with another person.
That is true. You're right. No one tells you how annoying it will actually be when the other person leaves lint on the dryer instead of tossing it two feet in the garbage! LOL Grr…
"My uterus'll fall out." LOLOLOL!
Whenever I need a smile this weekend, I'm going to think of that phrase coming out of your mouth in that sweet southern accent of yours!
Being a Civil War reenactor, I have experienced the corset…and may I add, I still have all my parts. CW reenacting has also brought me the hands on experience of what it would feel like to be in a real battle during that war, shooting a musket. It's very emotional to ready, aim, fire at a line of people. Makes you really think. This hands on helps me understand, so I can write about it.
I also agree with Ruth (above) marriage…you can read about it, but until you experience it…
I bet reenacting Civil Wars would be an amazing experience. I have a friend from HS who is BIG into doing that. I love looking at the photos he posts on fb!
Ha…I'd just say "Never say NEVER!" Don't say, "I'll never have a minivan," or, "My kids would NEVER act that way in public," because someday it will come around and kick you in the pants! Hee. Yes, parenting is one of those things it's easy to make huge statements about, but you never know what you'll do till you're an actual parent. Also, another thing is don't say, "I'll never homeschool/send my kids to Christian/public school!" I've seen sooo many moms say they'll never homeschool, and they become the biggest homeschooling advocates!
Something you have to experience first-hand…hmm…I'm gonna go with child birth. I always hate movie scenes with the laboring woman. They never seem real/right to me. Just one of those awful/beautiful/embarrassing/precious gifts I suppose! 🙂
Well, I know I sound like I'm copying, but really the first thing that came to mind was parenting. You can't know how to do it or how you will feel about it until you experience it. That's just the way it is…wonderful, difficult, scary, proud…it is all-encompassing!
Oh my gosh, the uterus comment. Hilarious! And I know what book you read that in. 🙂
I'm pretty sure the awesome-yet-pointlessness of a tractor pull is something people really need to experience in person rather than reading about. You just won't get the same "Whhhhyyy?" feeling when reading as you do sitting in the stands, eating nachos, wondering why in the world you're there…
