What Had Happened Was….

Here’s a little look into what happened on June 1st back in the days!

1533 – Anne
Boleyn crowned queen of England
And we all know how
that turned out. Shame on you, Eric Bana!

1813 – Capt
John Lawrence utters Navy motto “Don’t give up the ship”
I only included this
because I read “ship” wrong and then giggled.

1933 – Charlie Chaplin weds Paulette
Goddard
I would have loved
to have seen their silent wedding. And did he waddle with a cane when they
exited the aisle? Check out with the make-up and without! Meow!

1940 – Coffee
& tea rationed in Holland
If you ever try to
ration my coffee or tea, I’ll straight up punch you in the face.

1949 – Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz wed
for the second time
I guess they thought
their wedding was a joke. Badump bump ching!

1968 – Simon & Garfunkel’s “Mrs
Robinson” hits #1
I will never hear
this song again and not think of a particular fictional character.

1970 – “Everything
Is Beautiful” by Ray Stevens hits #1 Seriously? #1? Wow.

1991 – Roseanne
Arnold & Tom Arnold wed again, they divorced later
I’m seeing a pattern
with comediennes and the men who ride their coat tails.

1992 – Snowfall in Colorado
Um…doesn’t it always?

If you could go back in time and give advice to a celebrity couple, who would it be and what would you say?
Have a great weekend, everyone!

  1. You are too funny! I'm cracking up over "ship".

    1. Sometimes my eyes play tricks on me! LOL

  2. I would totally like to go back in time and give pre-marriage counselling to Princess Diana. Not sure it would have helped, but my heart aches when I think about how tragic her life was. I have no idea what I would say to her except that if she must accept the responsibility of being married to a royal, she would also need fo rely on God's love and only His love forever more.

    1. Great advice, Heather! 🙂

  3. THAT'S Charlie Chaplin?!
    Hubba hubba. LOL

    1. I know!!! 🙂

  4. You make me laugh SO much. I love it! This whole post had me giggling.

I'd give a little advice to Elizabeth Taylor at her first wedding: "Don't settle in too long, honey. You're just getting started."

Along the same vein, I might suggest Debbie Reynolds reconsider Eddie Fisher before saying, "I do." (Actually, what's amazing to me is that apparently later in life, Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor had a good friendship. Weird.)

    1. LOL! Loved your advice to Liz. Yeah, I call her Liz. We go way back. ha! Friends, huh? That is weird.

  5. What fun to travel back in time like that…

Hmm. I'll have to think about celebrity couple advice. I'm careful not to dole it out unless I know more and I think so often we think we know celebrities based on the info. we're shown/given, but there's so much more.

I'd applaud all those couples who've stuck it out. That's what I'd do.

    1. I applaud the ones who've stuck it out too. Celebrities and everyone else!

  6. Marriage isn't like the movies…you can't just yell "cut" and walk away.

    There's my advice:)

Have a great weekend, Jess–thanks for the giggle. I'm totally with you on the coffee & tea one!

    1. Great advice! I like that. In fact, for a wedding gift you could buy them the black/white movie marker thingys. And glue it together so you can't have any more "takes"! LOL

    2. HA! love it!

  7. To Brad and Angelina: get married before you have the kids!!

Great post! I love a trip down history lane.

    Have a great weekend!

    1. LOL! Yes, very sound advice, Ruth! I love doing this. Seeing what happened over the years is pretty cool.

  8. I LOVED this stroll back in time! Man, Charlie Chaplan was a cutie. Fun stuff, Fiend!!

    1. I know! At first I was like who'd wanna marry that clown, but then I saw him make-up free and thought…everyone!!! LOL

  9. Hahaha, over ship. Funny story…when my brother and I were little, my family watched Jurassic Park. Well, there's that part where they see the triceratops (I think?) and there's a large pile of poop. And the MC says a certain phrase.

My little brother (he was like 6-8, maybe? Possibly too young to see that movie, now that I think about it!) saw a large pile of dirt as we were driving one day. And he proclaimed, "That's one big pile of SHIP."

    Bahahaha.

So I didn't really answer you question, but now you have heard a funny story.

OK, I'll answer you. I'd tell Jessica and Nick not to do the Newlyweds show. Dis-as-ter.

  10. Dear Garth Brooks,

You aren't fooling anyone with that Chris Gaines nonsense. Cut it out already!

    Signed,
    Basically everyone on earth.

    1. Bwahahahahahahaha!!

  11. You know me and history…love the history time line!

Wow! That's a wild outfit that Roseanne is wearing!

    Have a great weekend, Jess!

    1. Her outfit might have been a foreshadowing of their bad marriage! LOL Whatever happened to them? kl

  12. To Marilyn Monroe and any of her husbands – honey, you don't need him to take care of you. You can be stronger than you dream.

    1. She was such an interesting and sad woman. Good advice!

  13. Hi Jessica. Great post today, as usual. I nominated you for an award on my blog. Thanks for all the fabulous and inspirational posts. 🙂 http://barbarahartzler.com/2012/06/01/the-versatile-blogger-award/

    1. Thanks, Barbara! How cool! I popped over and said hey! I'll have to address this week after next. 🙂 I really appreciate it!

  14. This post is hysterical. As a historian, I greatly appreciate it!

I'd tell all the ladies that came after Anne Boleyn that they are all idiots and should have their heads examined. That was much easier for Kathryn Howard, of course, who was wife #5 and also beheaded. 🙂

    1. I don't teach history, but I do love it! Good one! Cracked me up!!!

  15. I would go back in time and tell Katie NOT to marry Tom Cruise – he's a nutcase.

    1. I never figured that one out either. Weird.

  16. Love these historical fun facts! I'd tell Ms. Boleyn to find herself a handsome lordling and leave Mr. Tudor alone. I'd try to persuade Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn to stick it out. I think she would be alive today if they did.

Sadly, it didn't snow that much in Colorado this year 🙁

    1. I agree. There had to be someone else who would marry her! Not much snow? Wow!

  17. Wow, I had no idea Charlie Chaplin was such a handsome dude! My advice to him would be to go with the natural look. 🙂

    1. I know! Yes, definitely go with the natural look. He was extremely handsome!
